Mithila is an ancient kingdom of profound spiritual and historical legacy in the Indian subcontinent. Celebrated in the epic Ramayana as the realm of King Janaka and the birthplace of Sita, its enduring traditions elegantly bridge the sacred narrative with the natural world.

Art shaped by place

Often called Madhubani art, the ancient city's visual traditions use vibrant colors and geometric motifs to represent relationships between people, ritual, and nature. Project Mithila carries that heritage into a research base focused on exploring the icy moons of the outer Solar System. Its patterns and visual language can give the scientific mission a distinct cultural identity while connecting research into distant oceans with traditions rooted on Earth.

A pattern can be both an image and a record of how its maker sees the world.

Pattern as a system

Project Mithila draws inspiration from the ancient city's art in the research base's visual identity and design. The aim is to balance the clarity and organization scientists need with patterns that honor Mithila's distinctive cultural heritage.

So, why the name?

The name "Mithila" honors the remarkable art and cultural legacy of the ancient city. Bringing that heritage into a research mission among the outer Solar System's moons keeps the project connected to the diversity and creativity of life on Earth.
